WHAT We Do

A union member raises a fist in solidarity while using a book cart.

Local 1215 serves its members through two key functions

  • Bargaining: We negotiate a contract with the City of Chicago and the Chicago Public Library that governs library workers’ wages, job duties, benefits, and much more. You can review our 2017-2022 contract here.
  • Grievances: We represent library workers in disputes with our employer, or when our rights have been violated in the workplace. If you’re facing discipline, are being mistreated by your manager, or simply want to talk through something about your working conditions, please reach out to a steward immediately.

Local 1215 also organizes library workers to engage in collective action when other options prove insufficient.

We strive to be the most democratic union possible. Local 1215 holds monthly membership meetings to hear members’ concerns, share information, receive feedback, and to gather members’ input on potential decisions and plans of action.

The Local’s central leadership, the Executive Board, is composed of library worker volunteers elected from the Local’s membership every three years. The Executive Board handles the day-to-day operations and decision-making of the union. They are supported by the Trustees, the Local’s stewards, the Member Action Team, and a collection of committees all composed of library worker volunteers.

The members of Local 1215 ARE the union; our involvement as union members is not only welcome, it is crucial to our collective mission. Get involved and empowered! Sign up for the newsletter, attend a union social event, or join a committee and help us keep the local strong and responsive to members’ needs!
