Labor Beyond Chicago

Writers Guild of America on Strike

Since May 2, more than 11,000 Writers Guild of America workers have been on strike, with picket lines outside major studios in New York, L.A., and recently in Chicago. Television and motion picture writers are fighting against the destruction of their profession; two key issues are residuals from streaming programs and limits on the use of A.I. Negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) stalled at the beginning of May when the AMPTP rejected crucial Guild proposals without offering counter-proposals. You can find information on donating at the WGA East website here; sign the petition to support the strike here.

Whiteside County Public Health Workers Picket

AFSCME members in the Whiteside County Health Department have been at the bargaining table for over a year. They’re amping up their fight for a fair contract and have taken to the picket lines to put the department on notice that they won’t accept further delays. Read more at Council 31.

OPEIU Local 39 Workers Strike

Workers at one of Madison, Wisconsin’s largest private-sector employers, CUNA Mutual, have gone on strike following unfair labor practice charges and over a year of fraught negotiations. OPEIU Local 39, which represents the workers, asserts that the recent firing of their Chief Steward constitutes retaliation for the steward’s labor advocacy. The bargaining team reports that CUNA Mutual, which opened negotiations with inflammatory demands for concessions on health care and pensions, is no longer bargaining in good faith. You can contribute to OPEIU Local 39’s strike fund here.
